Dancing around the world

Linda ChenLinda Chen is determined to dance her way around the world - and she's taking Waterloo students with her! Her recent video, Brave - Campus Dance Style is a reminder for students to take time to be silly, especially during the stressful exam season.

Linda, a third year Accounting and Financial Management student, is a blogger, traveller and self-proclaimed expert in making whale noises. Her blog, Looking for Linda, documents her adventures across the world, from Oslo to the Sahara Desert. She began travelling out of a desire to understand her place in this big world of ours.

I think my largest motivation to travel was realizing that the world was an enormous place and that I merely a tiny speck of dust in it all. After going on my first journey alone, I knew that I was naïve, careless, and selfish. And although it was a hard pill to swallow, it allowed me to learn and to grow up. I became stronger, smarter, and more appreciative of my own company because it was one that I was continuously building and improving.

Her campus dance video is a part of a series of videos on her YouTube channel where she dances in various places across the globe. The video started out as a project between friends, but eventually grew as more people jumped in and showed off their moves.

At the end, we got people who we didn’t know dance with us too! I believe that everyone has a spark; sometimes, it just takes a little encouragement and some silly dancing to bring it out. It’s amazing watching people slowly lose themselves to the music.

Linda is currently in Singapore and will be studying abroad this fall term. While she never expected to love travelling as much as she does, she certainly doesn't see herself stopping any time soon.

All I want to do is search for the answer to our mysterious world and the curious truth about myself. And because I don’t believe I can find the answer, it will never stop becoming my inspiration.

For those whose wanderlust is ready for an adventure, Linda has the following advice:

Spend wisely, live with enthusiasm, and talk to strangers. Don’t be fearless; rather, be fearful and do it anyway. Be bold and be brave. You’ll be surprised at what you can do!
