Jack Rosen Award Winner 2014First-year student wins $1000 award for innovative, sustainable energy idea

Brieuc de Vuyst, a first-year Geography and Aviation student competed in the annual Jack Rosen Memorial Award last January, and successfully carried home the $1,000 grand prize for his creative and innovative presentation that aims to prevent, mitigate or solve environmental problems – ultimately paving the way to a sustainable future.

Brieuc wowed the judges with his project idea called “Voler Vert”. His unique and complex idea is to harness the energy released from an aircraft during take offs through adapted wind turbines, built low to the ground at the end of runways. Once the energy is harvested and stored, it could power the airport’s electrical network, saving more than 25,000 kilowatts of energy a year. Brieuc is confident that Voler Vert offers a more sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to powering the ground levels of airports like Pearson International Airport.

“Along with recycling aircraft energy, the project also focuses on the promotion of earning a green status, an incentive for airlines and airports to proudly advertise their energy reduction to the public – which can become a new asset for attracting customers”, Brieuc explained.

Brieuc, a native French speaker who arrived at Waterloo seven months ago from Belgium, hopes to further his contribution to the aviation industry through reducing energy consumption and would like to develop his idea into a sustainable business project. Brieuc is currently enrolled in the Geography and Aviation program in the Faculty of the Environment.
