With a passion and love for engineering, Anjali Joshi, a first-year Mechanical Engineering student, found it an easy choice to pursue a STEM degree at the University of Waterloo. Anjali is one of the six recipients of the 2016 HeForShe IMPACT scholarship, which is a part of the University of Waterloo’s IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative to advance gender equality.
For Anjali, this scholarship was the perfect springboard to start her undergraduate degree.
Receiving the scholarship has motivated me to be the best engineer I can be and to excel at my job without taking into account the gender gap. I will not only improve upon myself, but I also plan to motivate others to pursue careers in STEM without any hesitation.
For Anjali, receiving the scholarship inspired her to help other women join STEM programs and pursue their education and career goals. She joined WiSTEM to help do her part to advance gender equality. WiSTEM is an on campus community that provides support to current female engineers and university students, while encouraging the next generation of women to pursue careers in engineering. Anjali hopes that through the strong influence of HeForShe that women in STEM fields feel supported and inspired.
I think the 10x10x10 initiative is extremely important in not only encouraging women to look at STEM, but also providing them with a platform, as well as a voice to stand up for themselves and their academic abilities. HeForShe is a very empowering foundation that is definitely inspiring me to reach for greatness in the future. And I am sure I am one of many women that will be forever inspired by the work of HeForShe and the 10x10x10 initiative.”
HeForShe is the UN solidarity movement that promotes the need for gender equality in today’s world. The University of Waterloo has been invited to help lead HeForShe because of our commitment to gender equity. Waterloo is currently the only Canadian organization involved in the IMPACT 10x10x10 framework.
This is the fourth in a series of features on the UWaterloo life blog that will be promoting HeForShe.
