The winter holidays are near, and exams and final assignments are coming to an end soon. It’s important to treat yourself after some intense studying, churning out report after report and hectic group projects. If you’re drawing a blank on places to check out during the holiday season, we’ve got a few ideas up our sleeves.
Wonders of Winter
A local favourite. Located right in Waterloo Park, Wonders of Winter is a totally volunteer-run event that takes place throughout December. With over a hundred light displays spread out all around the park, we can guarantee you’ll find one that’s your favourite (mine is Santa’s sleigh and his reindeer). Head over during those snowy December evenings to see them for yourself!
Are bright lights in a park your kind of thing? If you’re willing to make the trek, Victoria Park in Kitchener is hosting an event just like Wonders of Winter – except it’s called Christmas Fantasy! Visit Victoria Park and view the gorgeous festive lights adorned on its buildings, trees and bridges.
Flight of White (Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory)
Ever wanted to insert yourself into a mythical universe? Here’s your chance to (somewhat) do so. Starting December 1, the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory presents the Flight of White, an exhibit that features thousands of delicate, free flying Rice Paper butterflies, lush white poinsettia flowers, sparkling white lights and classical music echoing through the conservatory. Everything will gleam bright and white – a sure sign of the beginning of a snowy winter.
Waterloo Region Museum Gift Shop
Thinking of doing some retail therapy? Admission fees are not required to shop in the gift shop, and you can find some cute holiday gifts, décor and ornaments to hang on your Christmas tree. Stop by the shop at the museum’s entrance for some locally made craft items and unique gift ideas!
Get a taste of what a German Christmas looks, sounds and smells like. Located in Kitchener City Hall, the Christkindl Market includes over 90 vendors inside and outside, live music and entertainment, and many photo opportunities!
We hope you take the opportunity to visit one of our suggestions. It’ll be sure to spark up your stay in Kitchener-Waterloo during the winter holidays. For some more ideas, see the list of UWinterloo seasonal events.
