Off to a great start!

Anastasia Santasheva, Dinah Shi, and Cheyenne Guo play with their BlackBerry phones in the Student Success Office.

First-year students receive BlackBerry scholarship

Three new uWaterloo students are also three of the Canadian recipients of the BlackBerry Scholars Program. Anastasia Santasheva in Systems Design Engineering, Dinah Shi in Software Engineering, and Cheyenne Guo in Mathematics were chosen out of 500 applications from women across 65 countries, as well as seven other women from around the world.

The Blackberry Scholars Program is an initiative to inspire more women to enter the computing industry in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Academic merit, extra-curricular involvement and a passion for the mobile computing industry are only a few of the criteria these students were judged on – and all of their hard work certainly paid off.

The panel of female leaders in STEM fields led by Alicia Keys, awarded Anastasia, Dinah, and Cheyenne with full, four-year university tuition scholarships, mentorship and professional opportunities.

Great work, ladies!
