Saba Oji receives her award.Applied Health Sciences student earns $5,000 leadership award

Saba Oji arrived in Waterloo when she was 13. She soon began grade nine at Waterloo Collegiate Institute (WCI), but began to feel alienated at school. She couldn’t speak English, and missed her home in Iran.

Though she felt alienated arriving in a new country, Saba did not let it stop her from achieving success. She got involved in volunteer activities at school, specifically with activities that she found would help fellow immigrant students. Saba volunteered with her school’s human rights club, Free the Children, and held the position of equality and inclusion co-ordinator on student council. She also helped to create a multicultural production at WCI, a mural to decorate the ceiling of the cafeteria, and a video from the point of view of English as a Second Language students to help their teachers connect with students.

Her passion and leadership was noticed, and this year the first-year Applied Health Sciences student is the recent recipient of the Lincoln M. Alexander Award. Recipients are awarded $5,000 for their exemplary leadership and effort to promote positive social change.

“Winning this award means a lot to me,” said Saba. “It showed me that working hard and that helping people does pay off, not only in the peace of mind that I gain.”

With her long list of achievements, Saba clearly earned this recognition. We can’t wait to see the positive change she brings to uWaterloo. You can read more about Saba’s success on the Waterloo Record.
