Heading up to the “Hill” with Zuhair Zaidi

Even as a child, Zuhair Zaidi was fascinated by government, immersing himself in readings about global affairs and politics from an early age. As he got older, he began volunteering with his Member of Parliament (MP), which inspired him to enter the realm of public service. <--break->

I was always interested in the global affairs that spin the world around. During high school I used to volunteer every summer for Member of Provincial Parliament Helena Jaczek, I went through my first election experience on her campaign – it was a wonderful experience. Although I was a volunteer then, the notion of engaging people inspired me, I still have withdrawal symptoms of knocking on people’s doors and hearing peoples stories."

Now, as a Masters student in the Public Service Program at Waterloo, Zuhair has had the opportunity to turn this passion into his profession.

Recently, Zuhair had the opportunity to work in the House of Commons as a co-op student, assisting an MP. During his time there, he drafted speeches and handled legislative matters. Getting to work within government processes gave Zuhair skills that have helped him grow professionally.

My experience on the Hill not only gave me ability to continue to expand my network but taught me a great deal about myself as well as the government process from a hands-on point of view. I had many challenges, some I will admit I may have failed, others I succeeded in, however, it ultimately made me grow as an individual and the knowledge that I gain I can reflect on to my career as a student and a professional.”

Being able to reflect on his experiences is something that Zuhair feels is vital to his success.

As a young professional, it is all about staying focused on achieving success and having ambitions. In my view, ‘Success’ is a term that has no limits. I am a strong believer in the idea of challenging yourself every day in order to maximize your potential; with high risk comes great reward.”
