Landing the dream job: one student's experience working at Microsoft

It’s that time of term again, when co-op interviews are in full swing. Main-round interviews start this week and anyone who’s ever applied for a job knows the nervous anticipation you get when you’re waiting to hear if you were selected for an interview. For Rhys Hollis, a second year Recreation and Leisure student, landing a job at Microsoft was a dream come true.

Rhys worked at Microsoft during his first co-op term, as Marketing Associate on the Xbox team. The position entailed collecting and interpreting user data, used for strategic purposes. The data focused on the Xbox console, accessories, games and Xbox Live.  For Rhys, getting to immerse himself in an admired company’s products was a huge opportunity.

I am most proud of this accomplishment because it was my first co-op term and I wasn’t expecting such an amazing job. As soon as I saw the job posting, I saw a chance to work at a huge company on the Xbox team, which is a product that I am passionate about, so it instantly became my goal to get this job."

When preparing for the interview Rhys made sure to explore the different services Microsoft offers, and specifically the Xbox brand. It showed the dedication and background knowledge the supervisors at Microsoft wanted in a member on their team. He also made sure, through working with his academic advisors, that switching his co-op stream wouldn’t affect the academic portion of his degree.

My advice to other students for the job search is to not limit yourself to one profession or job area too early — be open to a wide variety of jobs."
