Master's student Allison Turner receives prestigious Fulbright Award

Allison Turner Allison Turner has been awarded the Fulbright Canada student grant, which will allow her to pursue a Master's degree in Environment and Resource Studies at the University of Waterloo over the next two years.

Fulbright is a world-renowned program of highly competitive, merit-based grants and scholarships for academic exchange. It operates in over 155 countries and is one of the world’s most prestigious academic honours that is specifically aimed at promoting mutual understanding and supporting excellence.

Before making her way across the border, Allison completed her undergraduate degree at Purdue University in Indiana. There her academic excellence and commitment to the environment earned her a number of awards including the Udall Scholarship. Aside from her academic achievements, she was actively involved on campus, working at the Office of University Sustainability and serving as a student leader in multiple student organizations.

Allison says she chose UWaterloo because she was impressed with the ERS department and its commitment to utilizing research to effect positive change. During her stay in Canada, she will be working on a project titled “Rethinking Water Governance: A New Approach for the Great Lakes.”

It's exciting for me to have the opportunity to look at the Great Lakes from the other side of the border, and I'm delighted that I got support from the US to do so. I'm hoping I can return to the US upon completion of my Master's and use this new knowledge to make the Great Lakes even more great.

Allison signs off with some advice for lower year students –

Don't be afraid to talk to your professors. Get involved in organizations substantively -- don't just show up to meetings, but help with projects and make your voice heard and turn it into something wonderful. Work with people who aren't like you; you'll learn a ton from the experience.
