Nanotech gardening startup takes root

Most novel applications of nanotechnology tend to revolve around the fields of medicine or micro-robotics, leaving other fields largely unexplored. Recent Nanotech Engineering alumna Sonya Wach set out to change that by revolutionizing our approach to gardening.

Like many other hobbyist gardeners, Wach found that she didn’t have the time nor the skill to properly cultivate and maintain her plants. Thus, the idea for LeafGenius was born:

I wanted to create a product that could help make gardening something that is easy and care-free, so that people like myself can enjoy the beauty of flowers or the satisfaction of eating home-grown vegetables without the hassle.

Sonya began exploring and developing the idea in the final year of her studies. Today, LeafGenius is working on an all-encompassing fertilizer that delivers moisture, nutrients, and oxygen directly to a plant’s roots exactly when it’s needed most.

Although LeafGenius is nearly ready to launch their potting mix, getting her company to this point wasn’t easy, Wach explains:

Founding a startup is a hard task for anyone, especially if you are doing it alone. You have to be able to endure the stresses and frustrations on your own and determine the next steps if something doesn’t go as planned.

Aside from securing seed capital, the AC JumpStart award also provides mentorship and other market-readiness tools needed to successfully launch a new business.

Sonya, along with the rest of the LeafGenius team, is nearly ready to bring her product to market. Keep an eye out on the LeafGenius Facebook Page in the coming months so you don’t miss the launch date.

Happy gardening!
