Students launch campus compost initiative

Environment and Business students Mike Hager and Brandon Caron, and Science and Business student Andres Garcia are launching a new venture on campus today. Dedicated to improving waste management and sustainability on campus, they started the University of Waterloo Campus Compost (UWCC).

It all started in the fall 2012 term, when a group of passionate students from Environment came together to form a student-run compost coalition. Two years later, the UWCC aims to tackle more than campus waste management.

“We wanted more than just a compost program - we wanted a student-run initiative where compost was being produced by and for the campus community while providing a learning experience for students passionate about sustainability,” says Mike.

In winter 2014 the group was approved for funding from the Waterloo Environment Students Endowment Fund (WESEF) as well as space on campus from Plant-Ops, and they prepared to launch. The UWCC’s initial phase consists of 5 Goose Bin locations on campus, with more to come.

A student collects wood shavings in a Goose Bin to add to the compost. The Goose Bins are located at Environment 1 in the courtyard and the Environment Students Society lounge, Environment 2 at the Environment and Resource Studies faculty lounge, and Environment 3 at the Planning faculty lounge and Williams Fresh Café.

Today at 1pm UWCC invites students, staff, and faculty to attend their launch party, where they will cut the ribbon at the Compost Cow, also known as the compost drum, across from Environment 3 by Modern Languages.
