Paying it forward to teachers

William Zhou.Do you think teaching is an easy job? One mathematics student had this mindset but quickly changed his tune after he visited some of his old high school teachers and realized just how challenging the profession is.

This inspired UWaterloo student, William Zhou, is doing something to help his teachers.

They were dealing with lesson planning, assessment, and attendance, in addition to fending off angry parents and the bureaucratic administration. Now, I told them I can’t help them with the latter two, but I was willing to give it a shot with their daily tasks. That's when I started Chalk.com. – William Zhou

Chalk.com is a suite of productivity apps for educators who teach kindergarten all the way to grade 12. For teachers, this program solves the problems of lesson planning, assessment and collaboration. For the administrator the program provides analytical data on each educator’s progress in the classroom.

William credits much of his success with this project to Velocity.

Velocity has done a fantastic job embracing the entrepreneurial spirit. I’ve been through the whole Velocity experience, from the on-campus residence, to the Garage, to now graduating to my own office. They’ve really built an amazing community. –William Zhou

Chalk.com recently received a $500,000 investment from MaRS Discovery District - something that William is pleased to have to continue to develop his business. William recently brought Chalk.com to Digital-Life-Design 2015, a TED equivalent conference in Munich last week, where he presented the future of education and Chalk.com.
