Last Friday, November 2 students were encouraged to celebrate Random Act of Kindness Day by making thoughtful gestures throughout their day on campus. Whether you complimented someone’s presentation in class or held the door open for a group of people, the day proved that you could plant seeds of kindness anywhere you go.
We asked students to share their stories of kindness and highlight how a small act can go a long way through the #UWRAK contest on our @UWaterlooLife Instagram Story. We shared a fun #UWRAK story template for students to fill out with some potential kind acts, like “bought coffee for someone in line behind you” or “reconnected with an old friend.” We also left a blank space, so students could fill in their own acts of kindness.
The responses showed how the University can be a truly positive space, where students themselves take the initiative to make others around them feel valued. We’re so proud of our Warriors!
Cindy Wei, a University of Waterloo recreation ambassador, won our draw for the Positivity Prize Pack, consisting of The 52 Lists Project activity book by Moorea Seal, a Curious Creatures relaxing colouring book by Millie Marotta, and a University of Waterloo goose plush.
Sometimes it’s easy to get lost in day-to-day routines, forgetting to show those around us how much we care - which is why we also sent out digital cards to students on Instagram with positive and uplifting messages. It was nice to remind others that they were doing a great job or that they were a good person because these compliments are not often said everyday, though we may be thinking them.
It was a humbling experience in a way, to see that no one expected anything in return. While participating in my own random acts of kindness, it showed me that people really appreciate when you take the time to think of them, no matter how you show it. Although Random Act of Kindness Day may be over, you can still find ways to brighten the days of other students around you!
