Sarah Money holds up her Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Applied Health Sciences student earns Duke of Edinburgh Award

Sarah Money, a second-year Applied Health Sciences student, was recently awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Award by Governor General David Johnston. The award is open to anyone aged 14 to 25, and it challenges participants in four key areas: community service, skill development, physical recreation, and adventurous journey. “I've met a lot of people, traveled and gained independence - this prepared me for university,” shared Sarah.

Sarah did not shy away from the challenges and opportunities available to her via this award. She learned to pitch a tent, paddle a canoe, and live in the wilderness during a four-day canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park to meet the “adventurous journey” requirement. This trip was so life-changing that she credits it with her decision to join the Recreation & Leisure program at UWaterloo.

To meet the criteria of the other three areas, Sarah also earned 90 hours of community service by volunteering as a game organizer, a server for the Best Buddies program, a stage hand, a bingo operator at a fundraiser for seniors, and much more. She also learned to play guitar, and participated in competitive swimming and cross-country running to fulfill the skill development and physical recreation requirements.

"I got to do so many things and meet so many people I normally wouldn't," Sarah told the Brantford Expositor, "I'm kind of shy and this got me out of my bubble."
