Desmond Choi.A recent Sociology grad is putting his best foot forward tomorrow night as he pitches his company that connects people looking to hire live entertainment, on CBC's Dragon's Den.

As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Waterloo startup SparkGig, Desmond Choi didn't always know that entrepreneurship would be the path he would take. He was unsure what school and program to choose in his last year of high school. He knew math and science were not his strong suits. He loved music and dance but wasn’t sure he saw himself becoming a professional in either of those areas. Eventually he landed in Sociology at UWaterloo, which is where his career in entrepreneurship sparked.

SparkGig was created to foster community engagement and help those in need. This online platform allows entertainers to connect with people who are planning events and are in need of live entertainment.

We all love music - it has the power to connect with people like nothing else. I imagined a world where everyone, regardless of his or her background, had access to live entertainment. Not reserved solely for the rich, but for everyone, like the average person having their house party, birthday or wedding. –Desmond Choi

For every gig booked, SparkGig will give back to someone in need. Users of the site are able to support a cause that they are passionate about by donating a portion of their proceeds to that charity, through an initiative called Spark A Change.

I believe the arts are powerful and if we use it for good, great things can happen. This is why Spark A Change is at the centre of the business. Every performer on our platform picks a social cause they are passionate about and together we donate 10% of the proceeds towards a project we care about, such as accessibility to clean water, education or health care for all. –Desmond Choi

Desmond hopes to make a deal with Arlene Dickinson tomorrow night when he appears in the Dragon's Den. Don’t miss it - Wednesday, March 4 at 8pm on CBC.
