The start of something new

UWaterloo Rotaract club comes to campus

Rotaract stands for peace, health, community and education; it offers opportunities in the community, workplace, and internationally; and it’s a place where people who are looking to be challenged, make a difference, and have fun can come together.

It was just last term, winter 2014, that my friends and I decided to work together to make a UW Rotaract Club. Some of us (including myself) had never heard of Rotaract or Rotary International. So the first step in getting the group started was for us to learn about Rotaract. Here’s the gist for you:

  • Rotaract is the young adults section of Rotary International (RI)
  • RI works to raise funds for and provide hands-on help for different causes around the world
  • RI has six areas of focus:
  1. Promoting Peace
  2. Fighting Disease (ex. ending Polio)
  3. Providing Clean Water
  4. Saving Mothers and Children
  5. Supporting Education
  6. Growing Local Economies
  • There are Rotary/Rotaract clubs located all around the world made up of people from all walks of life, and they work and build relationships together
  • There are tons of conferences and leadership events

Once we got all of that down we worked on getting all the paper work done so that we could be recognized as a Federation of Students club. It took 3 hours one night, but with some caffeine and snacks we completed our constitution, and only had to revise it twice! Since then we have been planning for the fall 2014 term with events, fundraisers, and volunteering. There are a lot of passionate people working together so that UWRotaract can really get started this fall – they’ve truly been amazing.

We hope you’ll  check us out!
