Student entrepreneurs pitch for $100k

Velocity Fund Finals winners hold up their giant cheques on stage.

Velocity startups take to the stage to compete for $100,000 award

The tenth Velocity Fund Finals (VFF) kicked off in the Student Life Centre with 10 teams pitching their startup ideas to the crowded Great Hall. The teams were competing for one of four $25,000 cheques. Companies pitched ideas that would change how people test for allergies, improve how people garden at home and more.

The four big winners of the day were UBIQ, a wireless solution designed to make presentations easier in enterprise organizations by allowing users to wirelessly present with their existing hardware; ExVivo Labs Inc., a company developing a patch that would make it possible for people to test for allergies at home; Grobo, a personalized app-controlled in-home gardening system; and MAJiK Systems, a web app that allows manufacturers to monitor their machines in real time.

UBIQ was also chosen unanimously by the judges to receive the $10,000 Hardware Award.

10 teams also pitched earlier in the day for $1,000 prizes. Suncayr, a UV-responsive ink that alerts the wearer as to when they need to reapply sunscreen; and Boogaloo Bunks, panels that instantly transform bunk beds into private spaces for travellers in hostels won over the judges and earned the $1k prize. Suncayr also earned the $1,000 People’s Choice award.
