Immigration advising services temporarily suspended

Friday, June 7, 2013

Dear International Students,

We regret to inform you that effective immediately, international advising related to immigration/visas/study permits/work permits/Permanent Residence (PR) applications have been temporarily suspended in the Student Success Office. Our advisors will continue to help you with your questions or concerns around your transition to the university, cultural and community transition, medical/health/dental insurance and financial resources.

This has come into effect because all Canadian universities received a letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada indicating that an amendment (Bill C-35) to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), prohibits international advisors "from providing advice to students and faculty with regard to immigration applications, such as visas or student and work permits" unless they are certified under the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC).

Although Bill C-35 has been in place for almost two years, it was understood that educational institutions would be exempt – until the receipt of this letter.

All of our advisors are in the process of being ICCRC certified, but have not yet completed this process. In the meantime, if you require assistance, you can continue to contact or visit an international advisor and they will do their best to assist you and point you to appropriate resources, or you can contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada for immigration information.

This is an unfortunate situation, but we are working diligently to come to a satisfactory resolution. We will keep you informed as the situation evolves.

Thank you,
