Scam alert - Automated telephone calls

Monday, July 29, 2019

Please be aware of an ongoing phone scam targeting international students and newcomers. Across Canada, people are receiving automated phone calls from individuals claiming to be from the Chinese embassy/consulate. These calls incorrectly tell recipients that they've been implicated in a crime, involved in a fraud investigation, or have a parcel that needs to be picked up. Recipients are instructed to pay money to the caller and/or to isolate from friends and families, go into hiding, and not answer phone calls.

What you need to know:

  • The Chinese embassies and consulates will not:
    • Notify individuals by telephone, or recorded messages, about any documents or parcels to be collected, or legal cases to be handled.
    • Request personal information, such as a bank account or ID number, over the phone.
    • Transfer individuals to an “Interpol Center” or public prosecutor's office in any telephone conversation or recorded message.

    • Return calls for further contact.

  • Many news articles from reputable sources have been written about this scam.
