Scam alert: Telephone calls targeting Asian communities

Monday, August 15, 2022

Please be aware of an ongoing scam targeting Asian communities in Kitchener-Waterloo. The scammers are targeting callers with automated messages that claim to be calling from the Beijing police, INTERPOL, the Chinese consulate or a delivery agency. These calls are threatening in nature and the message alleges that you are under investigation.

What to do:

  • Hang up if you receive this type of phone call, even if they tell you not to.
  • Don't give the caller your personal information.
  • Remember that if someone is posing as an official and tells you that you are under investigation, it is a scam.
  • Learn how to protect yourself against scams by visiting the CRA website.
  • Read the Government of Canada’s website for information on what a possible scam phone call may entail.
  • If you suspect you may be the victim of this scam or have been tricked into giving personal information, immediately contact campus Special Constable Services, local Police Service or submit a report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
