General Accountability

Team Leads are responsible for training facilitators on workshop content, as well as delivering workshops to current UW students as part of the Student Leadership Program (SLP). Team Leads take on a more senior role within the program by providing training, development and ongoing support to facilitators. Team Leads must possess excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills and have a passion for student leadership on campus.

Nature and Scope

The SLP is a series of 12 experiential workshops for current Waterloo students (undergraduate and graduate). The intent of the workshops is to help students explore and enhance their leadership capabilities, and put them into practice. The workshops are offered on campus during the fall, winter and spring terms. Each workshop is 2 hours in duration and led by two facilitators.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Provide thorough and detailed training on workshop content to current SLP facilitators
  • Facilitate custom workshops (as requested) for Waterloo students and campus partners
  • Participate in all required commitments including: a two day Facilitation Training program (if not yet completed), team meetings, biweekly meetings with SLP Coordinator, and any workshop/training preparation that may be required
  • Assist with general program administration, which may include: scheduling content training, attendance, completing feedback and general program preparation  
  • Conduct one on one meetings with SLP facilitators to debrief workshops, set and assess goals, answer questions, and discuss any comments/concerns
  • Support SLP facilitators by shadowing workshops and providing constructive feedback
  • Complete an End of Term Summary report, which is submitted to and reviewed by the SLP Coordinator
  • Be knowledgeable of the required content for each workshop facilitated
  • Assist with the creation and facilitation of professional development sessions for the SLP Facilitators
  • Maintain regular communication with the Student Development Assistant and Coordinator
  • Act as a strong leader and positive role model for the Student Success Office


  • Be a full or part-time registered student (including co-op) and in good academic standing at time of hire
  • Have experience working with diverse student populations
  • Possess excellent communication skills including active listening, assertiveness and diplomacy
  • Possess and demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to lead one’s peers in a professional and meaningful way
  • Have an excellent understanding of the SLP and workshop content
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism in all modes of communication
  • Small or large group facilitation experience

Asset Qualifications

  • Experience facilitating SLP workshops would be an asset
  • Completion of some or all SLP workshops would be extremely beneficial

Working Hours

This position requires flexible working hours, as workshops are often held during evenings and weekends.

Mandatory Dates

All successful candidates will be required to attend mandatory facilitation training on March 7 or April 6. If not yet completed already.
