If you’re looking for a simple way to stay engaged with sustainability on campus, consider taking part in the Sustainable Campus Photo Contest. All students, staff, and faculty can participate in this contest, which requires you to submit a picture of on-campus sustainability initiatives, projects or events. All entries will be judged on different components and the top three entries will receive a prize.

Prizes:

  • First Place: $100 gift card to MEC
  • Second Place: $50 gift card to Retail Services
  • Third Place: $20 WATcard top-up

Contest Details

How to enter

  1. Take a picture related to sustainability on campus. Some examples include:
    • Transportation - Bike racks, taking the bus or walking to class
    • Academics - Working on a sustainability project or assignment
    • Engagement – Attending sustainability related event on campus
    • Grounds - Gardens/natural spaces
    • Food - Fair trade/eco labels and local food
    • Waste – Proper waste management, composting etc.
    • Energy – Energy conservation
  2. There are two options for submission:
    • Submit your photo by email to sustainability.coop@uwaterloo.ca
    • Send your photo by Messenger to facebook.com/uwaterloosustain
  3. Submit or post your photo between Tuesday, March 28th, 2017 to Friday, April 21st, 2017 at 5pm by email or Messenger.
  4. The photo submission must be in JEPG format with a minimum dimension of 1000 x 1000 pixels and 300 dpi. File size may not exceed 10mb.
  5. Only one submission is allowed per participant.

Who is eligible

  1. All students, staff, and faculty at the University of Waterloo are eligible for this contest.
  2. By submitting a photo to the Office of Sustainability you confirm the following:
    • You agree to the rules and conditions of this contest.
    • You grant the University of Waterloo a royalty-free, non-exclusive right in perpetuity to distribute, display and reproduce your photograph without attribution in any form of media. This includes allowing third-parties to share the photograph on their social media networks.
    • You are the owner of the photograph.

Prizes

The top three entries will receive one of the following prizes, which will be determined by a panel of judges:

  • First Place: $100 gift card to MEC
  • Second Place: $50 Earth Day Bundle
  • Third Place: $20 WATcard top-up

Judging

  1. Each entry will be judged in all of the following categories by three judges. Each category is worth 5 points, and an entry can score a maximum of 30 points based on the average from each judge.
  • Creativity
    • Photo has unique angles, technical components, characteristics and photo techniques to make the image stand out.
  • Story/Impact
    • The image captures or shows a message, story or impact happening on campus for sustainability.
  • Relevance
    • The photo is relevant and related to campus sustainability.
  • Originality
    • The photo is original
    • It contains a component of "newness" or "innovation"
  • Brightness/Contrast
    • Brightness and contrast levels complement one another.
  • Clarity
    • The subject/object in the photo is seen clearly in the photo.

In the case of a tie, the Office of Sustainability will re-submit the tied photos to the judges to re-evaluate only those photos. If there is another tie, the photo that scores the highest for story/impact will be declared the top winner. This ensures that the photo relates to one of the three dimensions of sustainability at UW, including sustainability in academics, operations, and engagement.

Winner selection

  1. The odds of winning are based on the number of entries. Winners will be selected by judges on the above criteria, not by random draw.
  2. The winner and two runner-ups will be chosen by three different judges.
  3. The winner will be selected by Monday, May 1st, 2017 and the winner and two runner-ups will be contacted by Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017.
  4. Winners agree to sign the Prize/Gift Reporting form from the University of Waterloo.
