Sustainable Aeronautics Summit

Sustainable Aeronautics Summit

The Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) is pleased to announce our inaugural Sustainable Aeronautics Summit.  The Summit is designed to be the preeminent event bringing together leaders from academia, industry, and government around the theme of sustainability innovations in aviation, aerospace, and space.

Conference Theme

The theme of the Summit is structured around the three pillars of social, environmental, and economic sustainability - and the interconnections between them - to create meaningful long-term solutions.  The educational program and exhibitors will showcase new technologies and innovations aligned with these themes:

Social Sustainability

Aeronautics connects our global society, facilitating cultural exchange and innovation.  A sustainable future depends on training and retaining competent and inclusive workforces, safely connecting communities around the world. The Summit will advance discussion in the following topics:

  • Human factors
  • Flight physiology
  • Educational technologies
  • Equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Sustainable tourism
  • Human-machine interface

Environmental Sustainability

Dependence on liquid fuel and increasing global demand make air transport a significant environmental concern. A sustainable air transport sector is one that dramatically reduces the negative environmental impacts of aviation. The Summit will profile the following themes, among other innovations:

  • Sustainable fuels
  • Air traffic optimization
  • Modern airframes
  • Propulsion technologies
  • Measuring and reducing emissions
  • Sustainable operational planning and practices

Economic Sustainability

Our global economy relies on millions of jobs in the aviation industry, as well as access to efficient, affordable, and equitable air transport of goods and people. To be sustainable, aviation infrastructure must support the long-term economic growth of the sector. The Summit will highlight the following areas and more:

  • Automation
  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Remotely piloted aircraft systems
  • Electric vertical takeoff-of-landing (e-VTOL) aircraft
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Cybersecurity
  • Optimization of aviation equipment, crew, and airspace capacity

Location and Details

The Summit will be held at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) Operations Centre on October 5, 2022.  The Summit will feature an educational program with internationally recognized speakers, a full exhibit hall, various networking events, and opportunity for aircraft static displays.

The Summit is set to become the nationally leading event to showcase innovations in sustainable aeronautics, inviting over 300 industry and government partners from across the country and globe including airlines, airports, manufacturers, technology leaders, world-leading researchers and many more.

Confirmed speakers for the event include a keynote from Commander Chris Hadfield and panel session including Dr. Sunjoo Advani and Dr. Suzanne Kearns.
