Research seminar: What does low-carbon growth mean for African cities and their socio-economic advancement? Insights from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Monday, April 4, 2022 10:00 am - 11:15 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

Abstract

In 2019, Africa accounted for only 5% of global energy demand and 3.7% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. However, global projections show that Africa’s rapid urbanisation will contribute to rising energy use and emissions, both regionally and globally. Using the case of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, this talk will offer new insights relevant to the discourse on Africa’s evolving energy landscape, including the nexus between GHG emissions and the socio-economic needs of communities; the key drivers of energy use and GHG emissions in the region; and the institutional and societal factors that may constrain low-carbon development. Future research areas and policy directions in the context of broader energy sector development in Africa and other regions of the Global South will also be discussed.
