Startup taps into maker market with a DIY soldering iron

The maker movement — a global do-it-yourself culture of people who make things — has inspired a group of Waterloo Engineering students to create a soldering iron that’s safe and easy to use.

SYDE grad student won the Norman Edmund Inspiration Award

Shahid Haider from the Vision and Image Processing Research Group in the Department of Systems Design Engineering is the proud recipient of the 2014 Norman Edmund Inspiration Award, for his research on non-contact, handheld imaging to infer a patient’s blood glucose concentration. 

The Norman Edmund Inspiration Award honors the contributions made by Norman Edmund to advance the science of optics. The recipient of the award is chosen from among the 45 global finalists in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, who best embodies the legacy of Mr. Edmund.
