Sherri Guenther Trautwein is a PhD candidate at Wyclife College and a Pastor at Lendrum Mennonite Church. Sherri will present on "Remembering Mary and her song: a consideration of Mary and her foremothers in the shadow of the Divine Warrior." The myth of the Divine Warrior looms large throughout Jewish literature and surfaces in the memory of the early Christian community in persistent and, at times, surprising ways. The Magnificat in Luke 2, often identified as Mary's Song, calls to mind expressions of praise and shouts of victory that pour forth out of the mouths of Jewish women when liberation secured by Israel's Divine Warrior is at hand. Is there a link? How might we re-read Mary, the expectant mother of the Prince of Peace, in relationship to a song of war?
