The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with a festival commemorating their Goddess of Offspring, Eastre, who was celebrated through her earthly symbol of the rabbit. From the earliest times, the egg was symbol of birth and was often wrapped in gold leaf or coloured with flower petals and exchanged.
