Machine Learning and Text Analytics

The explosion in machine-readable text, coupled with developments in textual analysis methods and tools, has expanded possibilities for applying new analysis techniques for accounting and audit practitioners and researchers. This professional development workshop is a hands-on introduction to textual analysis and machine learning applications to meet a variety of objectives.

The aims of this workshop will be to highlight the use of both simple and complex text analytics approaches for addressing a variety of issues of interest to workshop participants as described in more detail below.

Format/Structure of the Workshop

A combination of presentations, table group exercises and open discussion will be used. Participants will need to bring laptops suitable for downloading text analytic tools. Detailed download instructions will be provided several weeks in advance of the workshop.

What’s it all about?This workshop will cover both simple and complex automated text analytics approaches for addressing a variety of issues of interest to workshop participants; for example: sources of structured and unstructured text; pre-processing exploring, visualizing and describing text; searching and coding text; and transforming data for further analysis with data analytic and machine learning techniques.

Who should attend? This workshop would be useful to practitioners who are interested in developing services using text analytics and machine learning in their areas of interest.

Learning objectives

After completing this workshop an attendee will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of different automated text analytic techniques
  • Explain procedures commonly used in textual analysis that are not used in structured data analysis
  • Ask appropriate questions when hiring/acquiring text analytic talent
  • Prepare textual data for further analysis using techniques introduced in the Machine Learning and Text Analytics II Workshop.

Advance Preparation

Software Installation Required:

Please follow the instructions below and install the 30-day trialware versions of ProSuite and Rapidminer Studio on your laptop to be ready for the workshop. Begin the download and install process early. If you are using a university or company laptop you may need to contact your IT department to help with the installation.
