Why Ontario is struggling to fight Lake Erie’s toxic green goo

Ever since 2012, when Canada and the United States signed an agreement pledging to take action on high phosphorus levels in Lake Erie, the two countries have been working to make a dent. Canada’s public and private sectors have shelled out at least $30 million on research and pilot projects aimed at identifying the sources of the phosphorus leaking into the lake and at developing ways to eliminate them — and the toxic algae blooms they produce.

Sarawak to model mega dam management after Canada, CM says

KUCHING, Oct 7 — Sarawak will be taking Canada as a model in the management and governance of its mega dams and water usage, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg said today.

He said Canada, in particular the province of Ontario, has a long history and reputation of hydro power generation with the first hydro plant built about 100 years ago.

State of Sarawak visits Water Institute to uncover emerging technologies

The State of Sarawak, Malaysia is routing water from its remote regions into its cities. To support this initiative, a delegation of officials, headed by their Chief Minister, visited Ontario this past week to consult water experts on leading-edge practices and emerging technologies. On their roster of research powerhouse visits was the Water Institute, and following the Oct. 1 meeting, a solid base for future collaboration between the State and Institute researchers was forged.

Water Institute member awarded over $3 million to support Canada’s water treatment

Peter Huck, a civil and environmental engineering professor and Industrial Research Chair in Water Treatment, was recently awarded more than $3 million to continue his research program at the University of Waterloo.

Ren and Wong named to Royal Society of Canada

Two water researchers from the University of Waterloo have been named members of the prestigious Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.
