WI member’s COVID-19 wastewater surveillance is key to early detection in residences

Mark Servos, Water Institute member, biology professor, and Canada Research Chair in Water Quality Protection, has been leading early detection efforts of COVID-19 in municipal wastewater since the start of the pandemic.

Recently, his team’s work leading the University’s pilot residence wastewater surveillance program confirmed the presence of the COVID-19 in Ron Eydt Village and Village 1 residences.

Philippe Van Cappellen Named 2021 American Geophysical Union Fellow

[WATERLOO, ON] — Philippe Van Cappellen, Professor, Faculty of Science, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Canada Excellence Research Chair Laureate in Ecohydrology, has been elected as an American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) Fellow.

Since 1962, the AGU Union Fellows Committee has selected less than 0.1% of members as new Fellows. The AGU, a non-profit organization that supports 130,000 scientists and enthusiasts worldwide in earth, atmospheric, ocean, hydrologic, space, and planetary sciences, annually recognizes a select number of individuals as part of its Honors and Recognition program. Philippe joins 59 colleagues in the 2021 Class of Fellows.

Water Institute member and Department of Biology Professor Barb Katzenback has been selected as one of the first recipients for the new Excellence in Science Research Award, presented by Waterloo’s Faculty of Science.

WI professors win 2021 Outstanding Paper Award from Vadose Zone Journal

A research paper exploring the advantages of subsurface fertilizer placement co-authored by Water Institute members Merrin Macrae, professor from the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, and Fereidoun Rezanezhad, research associate professor from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, has received the 2021 Outstanding Paper Award in Vadose Zone Journal.
