University centre's research to be advanced at new centre led by Waterloo grad  

Launched to assist the City of Waterloo with a disintegrating household pipe problem in the 1990s, the University’s Centre of Advancement of Trenchless Technologies (CATT) is closing its doors at the end of this month.

Research snapshot: Bacterial communities in Calgary’s Glenmore Reservoir with an emphasis on cyanobacteria

Researchers from the forWater Network continue to publish insights from four years of transdisciplinary research. This snapshot features the bacterial communities in Calgary’s drinking water reservoir providing insight to water treatment and monitoring options with regards to managing cyanobacteria and toxic algal blooms.

This research results from a transdisciplinary collaboration leveraging expertise from Biology, Civil and Environmental Engineering and the City of Calgary.

WaterSTP graduates win first and second award for Master’s thesis

Kelsey Kundert, Senior Project Process Engineer at the City of Calgary, and Nik Knezic, current PhD candidate at the University of Waterloo, won first and second place in the American Water Works Association Academic Achievement Awards for best Master’s thesis, respectively. This award is part of an international competition with theses submitted from around the globe.

Earth Day and the climate crisis

Many view the first Earth Day as the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Water Institute member Sarah Burch, Canada Research Chair in Sustainability Governance and Innovation, discusses its relevance more than 50 years on. She is the executive director of Waterloo's Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change and a lead author of the recently released report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN body that assesses the science related to our changing climate.
