About Water Policy and Governance Group (WPGG)

The Water Policy and Governance Group at the University of Waterloo came to an end in 2022.

The WPGG had its roots in a research collaboration between Rob de Loë and Reid Kreutzwiser at the University of Guelph. When Rob moved to the University of Waterloo in 2008, he created the WPGG as a multi-university research collaboration focused on water policy and governance in Canada, and in selected countries around the world. Major themes in our research program included collaborative water governance, water security, source water protection, water allocation, and adaptation to climate change. With faculty members at other universities, partners in water management organizations, and an amazing group of graduate students and post-doctoral research, WPGG members carried out practical, policy-relevant research that contributed solutions to important water governance challenges.

The WPGG team is grateful to the Faculty of Environment, University of Waterloo, for providing us with dedicated research space and administrative support between 2008 and 2022.

Rob de Loë continues to be interested in water issues in Canada and around the world, but the focus of his research has shifted to exploring how photography can deepen engagement with environmental challenges. Current projects involve collaborations with staff from water management organizations in Ontario, some of whom are former WPGG members who have gone on to successful careers in the water sector.
