We will meet to discuss the recent Hillmann et al. paper "Evaluating the Information Content of Shallow Shotgun Metagenomics" today, in STC from 12-1 pm. The paper can be read here.
Lisa Johnson has selected our article for group discussion - "Cryptic CH4 cycling in the sulfate–methane transition of marine sediments apparently mediated by ANME-1 archaea" by Beulig et al in ISME this year. The article can be found here.
microTALK panel - topic: Microbes @ Work
On Wednesday Oct 10th at 10am come to QNC 1506 to hear Ontario Genomics give information on their upcoming Ontario regional Priorities Partnership Program (RP3).
Especially for undergraduate and graduate students, the newly formed WatSAM (Waterloo Students and Microbiology) club will be hosting a panel of speakers from multiple disciplines who can tell you how microbiology impacts their field of work, answer your questions, and possibly spark a love for microbial research.
Panelists include:
Asaf Levy - Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Plants intimately associate with diverse bacteria. Plant-associated bacteria have ostensibly evolved genes that enable them to adapt to plant environments. However, the identities of such genes are mostly unknown, and their functions are poorly characterized.
On Friday August 17th, WCMR will be hosting a day of Synthetic Biology at the University of Waterloo featuring Stanley Cohen, a pioneer in the field of genetic engineering.
On June 13th at 1pm Professor Jo Handelsman will present a seminar "Microbiomes: From the White House to the Lab" before receiving her honorary doctorate at convocation at the University of Waterloo.
STC 0060, June 13, 1 pm
Event Rescheduled! - Monday June 4th, 11:00-12:00, QNC 1506
Patenting Life is a tricky situation. Graham McKinnon, co-founder of Carbon Patent Group, discusses stories of CRISPR IP and patenting life as well as 101 rejections for USPTO.
Mr. McKinnon’s specialty is drafting and prosecuting patents in the fields of chemistry, therapeutics, drug delivery, genomics, proteomics, protein chemistry and medical devices. He is currently involved in the patenting of CRISPR in Canada.
Presenter: Aneisha Collins-Fairclough will lead our discussion on "A virus or more in (nearly) every cell: ubiquitous networks of virus–host interactions in extreme environments", published in the ISMEJ this year.
Join host Prof Laura Hug for the Environmental Microbiology Journal club to discuss a recent paper of interest in microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, metagenomics, and emerging microbiology trends.
Presenter: Lee Bergstrand: "Metagenomes reveal global distribution of bacterial steroid catabolism in natural, engineered, and host environments"
Join host Prof Laura Hug for the Environmental Microbiology Journal club to discuss a recent paper of interest in microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, metagenomics, and emerging microbiology trends.
Presenter: Saeed Amin. "Retrieval of a million high-quality, full-length microbial 16S and 18S rRNA gene sequences without primer bias"

Paper: Exact sequence variants should replace operational taxonomic units in marker-gene data analysis
The Environmental Microbiology Journal club discusses a recent paper of interest pertaining to microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, metagenomics, and emerging microbiology on a biweekly basis. One person selects the article of interest and provides a brief overview of the main findings and implications of the work. A group discussion follows.
This week's paper from the ISME Journal: Multidisciplinary Journal of Microbial Ecology talks about next generation sequencing and metagenomics. Join host Prof Laura Hug to learn more!
Presenter: Zinda Lu. A global atlas of the dominant bacteria found in soil.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
