SUMMARY:WCMR hosts: Young Investigator Series
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nLife as we know it depends on liquid water. Recen
t\nevidence indicates that not only did ancient Mars once have a vast\
nnetwork of surface waters\, but that liquid water potentially could\npers
ist in the Martian subsurface to this day. Study\nof analogue envir
onments\, or environments with environmental\nconditions similar to those
on ancient or extant Mars\,\nprovides insights into the potential life
forms that could\nexist in on Mars and other worlds. Lost Hammer Sp
ring\, located\non Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian high Arctic\, i
s one of the\ncoldest and saltiest terrestrial springs discovered to dat
e\, the\ncoldest known terrestrial methane seep\, and a close analogue
of\nputative Martian waters. It perennially discharges anoxic (<1 ppm
\ndissolved oxygen)\, sub-zero (~−5 °C)\, and hypersaline (~24%\nsali
nity) brines from the subsurface through up to 600 m of\npermafrost. Usin
g a multi-omics approach utilizing metagenome\,\nmetatranscriptome\, an
d single-amplified genome sequencing\, we\nrevealed an active microbia
l community in the spring sediments\nutilizing primarily inorganic com
pounds (hydrogen sulfide\, hydrogen\,\ncarbon dioxide) as energy and ca
rbon sources\, driven inpart by\nsulfide-oxidizing bacteriascavenging tra
ce oxygen. These results\ndemonstrated Mars-relevant metabolisms includin
g sulfide oxidation\,\nsulfate reduction\, anaerobic oxidation of methane
\, and oxidation of\ntrace gases (hydrogen\, carbon monoxide) detected u
nder anoxic\,\nhypersaline\, and sub-zero ambient conditions\, providi
ng evidence\nthat similar extant microbial life could potentially\nsurv
ive in similar habitats on Mars.

CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday July 7\, 2026\n\n1:30 pm\n\nDC 1302\n\n\"ENGINEERING MI
CROBIAL CELLS FOR APPLICATION AS LIVE CELL\nTHERAPEUTICS\"\n\nThe ominous
rise in the frequency of antibiotic resistant microbial\ninfections poses
a global threat to human health. This threat comes in\nthe direct form of
disease related to infection of humans but also\nindirectly in the form of
challenges to food security through loss of\nagricultural crops and anima
ls to disease. The development of\nantibiotic drugs in previous decades w
as transformational\, providing\ncheap\, effective treatment for what woul
d otherwise would be a lethal\ninfection. As microbial strains resistant t
o our front-line antibiotic\ndrugs have emerged\, there is an urgent need
to develop new\ntherapeutic strategies and tools. Synthetic biology a
nd metabolic\nengineering can be applied to generate \"weaponized\" live c
ell\ntherapeutics providing new means to combat the rapidly evolving threa
t\nof microbial pathogens. In this presentation\, I will highlight\nprogre
ss from my laboratory in engineering probiotic microbial cells\nthat have
been endowed with functionalities derived from\nbacteriophages and synthet
ic nanobodies allowing them to inhibit\nmicrobial toxins\, kill microbial
pathogens and deliver therapeutic\nmolecules. The potential benefits of en
gineered probiotics are\nhighlighted along with the challenges that must s
till be met before\nthese intriguing new therapeutic tools can be widely d
eployed.
