SUMMARY:Seminar in Biology by Nicole Noel
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION: INVESTIGATING PHOTORECEPTOR SPECIALISATIONS AND BREAKDOWN THR
OUGH\nFISH MODELS\n\nAbstract: Vision is dependent on the appropriate deve
lopment\,\narrangement\, and maintenance of the light-detecting photorecep
tor\ncells. Despite decades of study\, it is still unclear how distinct\np
hotoreceptor organisations (termed mosaics) impact vision in diverse\nfish
species. Photoreceptor proportion and mosaic organisation\ninfluences dis
ease manifestation\, but the mechanisms that underlie the\nassociation bet
ween photoreceptor mosaic structure and age-related\ndegradation are ambig
uous. The turquoise killifish (N. furzeri) is an\nemerging model of accele
rated ageing which can be utilised to\ninvestigate how photoreceptor speci
alisations contribute to visual\nfunction across species and also assess a
ge-related deterioration. I\ndetermined that the turquoise killifish has p
hotoreceptor proportions\nakin to the human central retina\, and distinct
photoreceptor topology\ncompared to the commonly used zebrafish model. I a
lso observed that\nturquoise killifish develop many of the hallmark age-re
lated retinal\npresentations seen in humans\; thus\, they serve as a natur
ally\noccurring model of ageing retinal disease that can be used to\ndeter
mine why photoreceptors break down over time. My work will\ninvestigate ho
w vision differs between fish species as a consequence\nof their respectiv
e photoreceptor mosaics\, as well as identify\npathomechanisms underlying
 age-related photoreceptor deterioration.
