Thoughts on the Battle of Marathon as a landmark in Greek and Universal History and its current state

Join senior Greek scholar Professor Kostas Buraselis as he explores the ancient and modern relevance of the Battle of Marathon. Through new analyses of archaeological and historical evidence, Professor Buraselis will discuss the global importance of this moment in Greek history.

This program will include a Wreath Ceremony and presentation of student scholarships as part of the Toronto Marathon Initiative, a joint initiative by the Royal Ontario Museum, the Consulate General of Greece in Toronto, and the Hellenic Canadian Academic Association of Ontario.

About Kostas Buraselis

Kostas Bouraselis

Professor Kostas Bouraselis did his undergraduate studies at the University of Athens before moving on to receive his PhD in Ancient History from the Philipps-Universität Marburg (Germany, 1979). Following his studies, Prof. Buraselis was a research fellow at the Research Centre for Antiquity at the Academy of Athens (1980-1985), before moving on to teach at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he was subsequently promoted to Full Professor (2000), and is now a Professor Emeritus. While at the University of Athens, Prof. Bouraselis held many prominent positions, including Head of the Library, Head of the Department of History and Archaeology, Deputy Head of the Saripolos Foundation of the University of Athens, and Vice-Rector of Academic Affairs and International Relations. Prof. Bouraselis has also held numerous visiting professor positions, notably in Greece, The United States and Germany.

A noted expert in the fields of Hellenistic and Roman History, he has special interests in the political history of these time periods, the territories of the Greek East and in the ancient Ruler Cult. To this end, Prof Buraselis is the author, editor and co-editor of numerous books, articles and volumes with these themes.
