The Master of Arts in Ancient Mediterranean Cultures is a joint program between the Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, and the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo.

Admission Requirements

The Master's program emphasizes research techniques as well as ensuring a sound knowledge of the primary sources, both linguistic and archaeolgical. Admission to this program will normally be from a Classical Studies or Near Eastern Archaeology background, including an adequate preparation of ancient languages. Students needing further background preparation in these languages may be required to take a qualifying year. To be admitted to the program, applicants must meet the general admission requirements of the unversity. (See Graduate Studies Calendar - Admission Requirements )

Specific requirements are as follows:

  • A minimum admission average of B+ (78) in the last two years of undergraduate study, exclusive of first year level courses in those two years, is normally required. An honours graduate in a program other than Classical Studies (or closely related discipline with a similar language training) may be admitted if evidence justifying admission is offered; however, a program of appropriate preparatory studies (qualifying year) may be required of such applicants.
  • Students are expected to submit a statement of research interests.
  • Students are expected to be proficient in the language(s) needed in their areas of research.
  • A minimum of three letters of reference from academic referees are required for admission to a Master's program.
  • Official transcript from all other post-secondary institutions.
  • Proof of competency in English (if applicable).  A score of at least 600 is required in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).  See Academic Regulations - English Language Proficiency Certification for other acceptable tests of English.

Degree Requirements

The objectives of the program will be achieved through a combination of coursework and a research project culminating in a major paper or a thesis.

            • The Research Paper option requires completion of 6 term courses (0.50 unit weight) (including CLAS 600 and CLAS 601) plus a Master's Research Paper.
            • The Thesis option requires completion of 4 term courses (0.50 unit weight) (including CLAS 600 and 601) plus a Master's Thesis.

Since Greek, Latin, and Semitic languages are integral to research and teaching within the three principal fields (Archaeology and Art; Ancient History; Literature), they are key components of the program, and a working knowledge of at least one of them is required.

            Course Requirements:

            • CLAS 600 - Research Methods in Ancient Mediterranean Cultures
            • CLAS 601 - The Integration of the Ancient Mediterranean World
            • 2 electives or 4 electives dependant on Master's Thesis or Master Research Paper
            • Language Requirements:

Language requirements will be established based on the student’s area of specialization.
