A wide variety of scholarships and bursaries are tenable for graduate study at the University of Waterloo. These include: Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Scholarships and Fellowships, Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS), Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGS-ST), Ontario Mental Health Foundation Fellowships, National Health Bursaries, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Postgraduate Scholarships, Queen Elizabeth II Scholarships, Mental Health Training Bursaries, Medical Research Council of Canada (MRC) Scholarships, NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships, Ontario/Quebec Exchange Program, UW bursaries, etc. Students who wish to apply for the above mentioned awards should do so by completing the application forms available at the university they are currently attending. Application is usually made early in the fall of the year preceding the one for which support is sought. Graduate students are eligible for teaching assistantships and research assistantships. Teaching and research assistantships, fellowships and other awards may be combined in various ways yielding student stipends of about $10-14,000 per year. Students residing in countries other than Canada are advised that many of the above sources of financial aid are available only to those who are citizens of Canada or who have permanent resident status.
Teaching assistant positions are available for students in each department and at the time of acceptance departments will inform students whether or not a TA is being provided. Generally, TAs are provided for all incoming full-time students. Those who wish to be considered for a research assistant position should contact the department associate chair to find out what positions are available and when applications should be submitted.
It is also possible for graduate students to gain industrial experience while studying for a higher degree. More information regarding this University-Industry interaction may be obtained from the associate chair of the respective departments.
