Master of Engineering (MEng)

The Master of Engineering (MEng) program may be taken by full-time students or those who wish to study on a part-time basis while remaining in full-time employment external to the University. The University of Waterloo does not provide funding for MEng students, and the candidates are expected to be self-supporting.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for students admitted to the Master of Engineering (MEng) program are as follows:

  • An Honours Bachelor's degree (or equivalent with a B standing (75%).
  • Three letters of reference at least two of which must normally be from academic sources.
  • Proof of competence in English (if applicable). See Academic Regulations - English Language Proficiency Certification for details.
  • The Civil Engineering MEng program is open to Canadian and Permanent Residents only.  The program is not available to Visa students.
  • MEng students are only admitted to the program in the Fall Term of each year.

Admission deadlines

The deadline to submit a complete application for Canadian students, is:

  • July 1st for Fall term

The deadline to submit a complete application for Permanent residents, is:

  • May 1st for Fall term

Degree Requirements

  • Eight (8) one term (0.50 unit weight) graduate level courses taken from the 500, 600 and 700 series courses (or courses acceptable for graduate credit) and one (1) technical/professional writing course for engineers;
  • maximum of two (2) 500 level courses may be counted for credit;
  • the candidate must obtain a pass in all courses credited to his or her program, with a minimum overall average of 70% (a grade of less than 65% in any course counts as a failure (F);
  • at least half of the courses used for credit must normally be Faculty of Engineering courses.
