Improving your working conditions: policy, negotiations, and other issues

FAUW works for better working conditions for faculty through both formal processes and informal advocacy efforts.

Collective bargaining at the University of Waterloo is handled differently from most post-secondary institutions in Ontario and Canada.

  • Compensation settlements are negotiated every few years by three-person teams from each of the Faculty Association and the University.
  • University policies that concern faculty terms and conditions of employment (Class F policies) are the responsibility of the Faculty Relations Committee (FRC). Members of the FAUW Board of Directors make up half of FRC; the other five members are appointed by the administration.
  • All other matters related to the working conditions of our members are generally worked out informally by the Faculty Relations Committee, at the direction of the Board.
