building community

We’re connected to the community that made this institution possible and to our networks around the world.

Each year, the University of Waterloo and our Federation of Students thank our community for its partnership and mutual support by hosting Waterloo Region’s flagship Canada Day Celebration. Canada Day 2014 marked the 30th anniversary of our celebration, with more than 60,000 people in attendance.

The Waterloo region is unique in Canada. Co-operative values, tracing back to the region’s Mennonite heritage, support a capacity for innovation and entrepreneurship that is recognized around the world.

To continue strengthening the community we call home, we have developed a new strategy that takes our community engagement to the next level. Based on extensive consultation with our community partners, the University of Waterloo is focusing on five priority areas including arts, culture and diversity; economic development; health and well-being; sustainability; and youth engagement.

Our 2013 Economic Impact Report demonstrated the significant social and economic role Waterloo is playing both here in the Waterloo region and further afield. The University of Waterloo catalyzes $2.6 billion in total spending impacts, much of that centred in the Waterloo region where 72 per cent of local employers depend on our graduates and co-op students as a source for talent.

We are building a better world, starting with our own backyard.
