UWaterloo in Asia

University of Waterloo faculty and staff travelled to Asia this week to meet with international alumni and partners and participate in two alumni events that will connect and engage close to 400 alumni and friends.

President and Vice-Chancellor Feridun Hamdullahpur, Interim Vice-President of Advancement, Erin Sargeant Greenwood, Vice-President of Research, George Dixon, Interim Vice-President International, Ian Rowlands, and Faculty Deans made the journey to Singapore, Hong Kong and China.

“The University of Waterloo is deeply committed to our alumni and partners in Hong Kong and throughout east Asia, and it’s always great to reconnect with these valued colleagues,” Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor, said of leading his 2016 presidential delegation to the area. “Our alumni are doing phenomenal work in so many fields across the region, and as they do so, we’re thrilled to help them leverage their membership in our alumni family.”

The first stop of the trip landed in Singapore at the Chapter Fall Alumni Reception on November 7th. Ms. Lynn Macdonald, High Commissioner of Canada to Singapore, as well as delegates from the University of Waterloo, hosted a gathering at the High Commissioner’s Residence for Waterloo alumni, students and friends. The evening celebrated some key alumni achievements in Singapore and provided alumni with updates from campus and ongoing Waterloo activities in Singapore.

Delegates will end the trip in Hong Kong for the Annual Hong Kong Alumni Dinner, presented by the University of Waterloo Alumni Association (Hong Kong) and Alumni Relations on November 12th.

Alumnus Vivien Liu (BAS ’06) will be the keynote speaker, sharing her experience as an architect and photographer now based in Hong Kong. Vivien is a rising star in the Hong Kong architectural community and is best known for her unique approach to photography and her growing popularity on Instagram.

With more than 188,000 alumni worldwide, events such as these truly allow UWaterloo to engage with our international alumni chapters and networks on a global scale. Our global alumni and friends continue to play a key role in helping UWaterloo be recognized as one of the world’s top innovation universities.
