Dear alumni and friends,
My name is Andrea Carthew and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as the Director of Advancement for the Faculty of Health. In my new role, I look forward to the opportunity to meet with our alumni, partners and friends to learn more about your experiences, your connections and what matters to you.
This is a critical time for the Faculty of Health as we establish new goals and ensure we align with the University’s Waterloo at 100 vision. Between UWaterloo’s Health Futures initiative and the announcement of a new hospital just north of campus, it is clear that there is a spotlight being put on health. I’m looking forward to doing my part to promote, advocate and advance the Faculty’s priorities.
While I’m new to the Faculty of Health, I am not new to the University of Waterloo. I have been with the School of Optometry and Vision Science for 20 years, where I was responsible for developing and implementing the fundraising, donor relations, alumni affairs and associated communication strategies, leveraging resources and collaborating with campus partners. This includes developing and leading all aspects of the School’s $35 million dollar fundraising campaign, which has raised more than $28 million to date. My experience at the University, in fundraising and community engagement, with a background working with a health profession, positions me well to be able to hit the ground running.
At a cornerstone of our efforts, the Advancement team will be focusing on expanding engagement opportunities and will look for ways to connect, share the Faculty’s vision and get your feedback. This includes launching a new Healthy Waterloo Initiative, which may include a well-known event such as the Fun Run! Stay tuned for more information and details throughout the coming year.
This is an exciting time for the Faculty of Health and I look forward to working together to make our vision a reality. Please feel free to connect with me anytime!
For now, take a look at other ways to support the Faculty or access professional development:
Support the Margaret Burnett Fund
Marg Burnett, who retired in 2022 as the long-time administrative officer in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences, writes about the Margaret Burnett Fund:
"I was honoured to have this scholarship initiated by Waterloo colleagues, friends and family upon my retirement. I chose to direct these funds to supporting graduate students as over my 41-year-career, I was fortunate to watch first-hand how instrumental graduate students are to the success of our program. Their impact ranges from their roles as teaching assistants in our hands-on learning labs, community support of our outreach and community programs, to mentorship and leadership roles in faculty research labs, as they pursue their own research questions. Financial support for our graduate students is imperative to enable them to focus on their studies, research and leadership roles in our department."
