Emily Bax was born in 1882 in London, England, and was educated at the Grey Coat Hospital Foundation School. She was the second woman to be employed as secretary at the American Embassy in London, and worked there from 1902 to Dec. 1914. From December 1914 on she resided in New York. In 1939 her book Miss Bax of the Embassy was published. Emily Bax died Jan. 3, 1943.


The fonds consists of two items of correspondence to Mrs. Milner Wood, Woodman's Point on the St. John's River, dated June 3, 1938 and May 16, 1939. Topics discussed include Emily Bax's book, the World's Fair, the King's speech, and her daily life and plans.

  • Donated by the National Council of Women of Canada as part of the Lady Aberdeeen Memorial Library. The letters came to the National Council in 1965 from Mrs. Milner Wood.
