Establishing our Alumni Hall

As part of our 50th Anniversary, the School took on a project to ensure that our history is remembered and our many alumni from across the country are recognized.

Through the Museum of Vision Science and with support from the EJ Fisher Memorial Endowment Fund, we were able to frame ALL of the class composites that we have to create what is now called Alumni Hall.

Alumni Hall

Because of our long standing history as a profession in Canada, we actually had more composites then we were able to fit in one space!  Therefore to ensure that all were displayed and we had plenty of room for the future, the Alumni Hall was split into two sections.

The first section showcases alumni from 1919 to 1967, the last class to graduate from the College of Optometry of Ontario, located in Toronto.  These alumni represent the history and roots of the profession in Canada.  You can find this display of composites on the 3rd floor of the School, outside of the Barbara and Jacob Sivak Lecture Hall, room 347.

The second section showcases alumni from 1968 to today.  These alumni represent the first graduates of the University of Waterloo, and have contributed to the evolution and continued growth of the optometry program and the profession in Canada.  You can find this display on the main floor of the School’s addition, around the Museum of Vision Science.

Alumni of the School look at class composites

A special thank you to Betty and Lorne Joyce, OD ’63 for their generosity in supporting initiatives such as this which capture and preserve the history of the School of Optometry & Vision Science.  Be sure to come and visit us, and look for classmates and colleagues!

Missing!

In this process, we did discover that we were missing a few of the class composites.  We are still looking for: 1920, 1921, 1923, 1924, 1939, 1951, 1960, 2006, 2014, 2016.
