The School of Optometry & Vision Science was excited to receive a new Toyota Sienna van thanks to the generosity of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) with plants in Cambridge and Woodstock, Ontario. The new van will be used to support the School’s vision outreach program which helps patients who are under-served and focuses on the vision care needs of children, families, seniors and persons with special needs.
Through outreach, our program contributes to improved literacy and learning, increased safety and independence, as well as societal interactions and contributions, all of which contribute to an improved quality of life. TMMC’s gift of a van ensures that the School is able to reach people, who, for a variety of reasons, would be unable to receive the vision care they need.
The School of Optometry & Vision Science outreach programs bring critical vision care to the people who need it most,” said Fred Volf, President, TMMC. “TMMC is pleased to provide this vehicle donation to help the School reach more patients, improving people’s safety and relationships with the world around them.
The outreach clinics also provide students with an opportunity to practice and hone their skills as training optometrists, while expanding their sense of social responsibility. They are able to see for themselves the impact and importance of giving back. This is an experience that we hope they will take back to their own communities across Canada when they become practising optometrists.
The new van from TMMC complements a previous gift the company made in 2008 which has had an instrumental role in ensuring that our outreach program can provide vision care to those in need. To date, vans donated by TMMC have helped ensure access to essential vision care for over 5,000 patients.
