Every year, teams from the School’s four classes take to the ice to battle for the coveted Cornea Cup, made possible through the generous support of CooperVision. This year, staff, students and faculty were treated to post-game recaps from talented third-year student Jonah Gilham. We hope you enjoy his final commentary as much as we did!
On January 4th, 2019 the puck dropped on the ice yet again at the Columbia Icefields and the Corneal Cup was in full swing. The fourth-year Eyelluminati were out to defend their title, the third-year Eyensteins were hungry for their first trip to the finals, and the second-year Peyethons were even hungrier to finally steal a win from their rival Eyensteins. The Notorious B.EYE.G. weren’t sure what to expect going into the tournament, but after seeing them play, it is fair to say the optometry admissions committee would be better off pursuing a career as NHL scouts. The first years picked up three wins in the round robin and everyone else was left battling it out to see who got the chance to get a shot at the cup. The Eyensteins took down the Peyethons in an absolute nail biter, but after playing the fourth-years the Eyensteins loss meant it was Eyelluminati confirmed as the fourth-years booked a one-way ticket to the finals.
Lucky for the Peyethons, they got another chance to battle it out with the Eyensteins. Every game with these two teams thus far has filled the Columbia Icefields with electricity from the energy both on the ice and in the crowd. The consolation final proved to be much of the same. Goals were traded one after another, momentum kept swinging and it’s likely everyone in the rink at some point had a CSCR. In the final minute, the Peyethons brought it within one but the Eyensteins defense was successful in keeping their matchup record squeaky clean. Looks like the Peyethons will have to strike next year.
When the finals came around, the Eyelluminati had their work cut out for them being short-staffed and playing against the B.EYE.G home ice advantage. However, if there was one team that could pull off the upset, it would be the defending champions. It was the B.EYE.G’s game to lose, but after three periods of lock down defense and a 3-0 first year lead, the Eyelluminati would need a prayer to be answered. Eyelluminati captain Brandon Bzovey hammered one home to try to gain some momentum for the squad but nevertheless the game ended 4-1 with a goal from Sydney Kaummans. As finals MVP Daniel Toth raised the cup over his head in celebration one could only wonder of the potential dynasty that could be created in years to come.
