Keiko and Charles Belair Centre for East Asian Studies

The Keiko and Charles Belair Centre for East Asian Studies (formerly known as the East Asian Studies Centre)  serves as a pivotal hub for community outreach and research networks in East Asian Studies. Since its establishment in 2007, the Belair Centre has spearheaded research projects, conferences, conference panels, speaker series, and other events for community outreach, fostering collaborations with diverse institutions, networks, groups, communities, colleagues, and friends across Canada, Japan, and beyond.

The Belair Centre has also been the physical centre of the East Asian Studies on campus at Renison and the University of Waterloo.

Activities and Initiatives (KCB-C)

  • Belair Centre Speaker Series/ Asia-Pacific Studies (APS) Series
    • The Asia-Pacific Studies (APS) is an inter-disciplinary study group of scholars working in the Asia-Pacific area studies in Southern Ontario, Canada. • The Japan Futures Initiative (JFI) is an international network of scholars and practitioners dedicated to the promotion of the policy-relevant social scientific study of Japan, with an eye toward better understanding challenges that Japan, Canada, and other OECD countries face in the future, and to the identification of opportunities to enhance Canada-Japan cooperation. Established in 2011, JFI has led collaborative research projects and brought significant initiatives to Renison and UW students, such as Japan Canada Academic Consortiums (JCAC) programs such as the JCAC Student Forum and Japan Study Program, the “Hope for Youth” program, and the Kakehshi Projects.
  • Sakura Language School (Ren)
  • King Sejong Institute (Ren)
  • Departments of History (UW)
