Drake Dereniowski recently completed his internship at BMO Bank of Montreal in the role of a User Experience Design Intern supporting the Capital Markets re-design team. Here is what he had to say about the experience:
Describe the interview process:
The interview process for me was a lot different than the majority of my classmates, largely because I was completing my study abroad term in Madrid at the time. Despite the six hour time difference, I was still able to setup a Skype Interview BMO. Throughout the interview, I was asked a variety of questions pertaining to my background, portfolio pieces, future goals and aspirations, and of course, why I felt like I was a good fit for their organization.
What type of work did you do?
Over the course of my internship, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with a variety of teams, however I worked most closely with the Digital Marketing team.
I was exposed to plenty of different types of work - having this opportunity afforded me the ability to complete work such as developing and conceptualizing wireframes and prototypes, creating digital advertisements, presenting design concepts in stakeholder meetings, along with updating asset libraries and brand user interface guidelines.
How would you describe the experience?
Overall, I can say that my experience was nothing but positive. The work I got to do was directly in my field of interest, I gained practical and hands-on experience at an industry level, and I worked with highly talented and friendly staff members from a variety of backgrounds. Ultimately, I developed skills that I simply could not have gained in the classroom. The internship at BMO was more than I could have ever expected, and was certainly a highlight of my time spent at the University of Waterloo.
What did the experience teach you?
I can confidently say that I learned a whole lot in my four months spent at BMO. I was able to develop new skills on the job, I learned how to network and establish long-lasting professional relationships, and I also gained experience working on diverse teams all while developing a greater sense of professionalism.
During my time with the Digital Marketing team, I was able to work on engaging and challenging projects while simultaneously develop confidence in my future career. My internship at BMO taught me invaluable lessons and is without a doubt an experience I’ll always be thankful for.
