Exciting changes to Reunion

Alumni message

Starting in 2019, you will have two great opportunities to return to campus and reconnect with your classmates and fellow Applied Health Sciences (AHS) alumni:

  • Alumni Weekend on June 1 will recognize reunion classes celebrating milestone anniversaries
  • Alumni Black and Gold Day will take place in the fall and consist of the familiar Fun Run and Warriors football game (with Alumni V.I.P. Tent)

In addition, many of you have told us how much you’ve enjoyed touring the Centre for Community, Clinical and Applied Research Excellence (CCCARE). Opened in fall 2016, this facility is continually developing new programs, educational opportunities and partnerships to off er greater advances in research and in promoting community health. Contact me to book a tour and see for yourself!

Finally, thanks for all you do to help today’s students. If you haven’t already given to support the AHS Scholarships Fund, please see our appeal and give it some thought. Your gifts are absolutely critical to ensuring today’s students receive the same quality AHS education you had while you were here. You can also help immeasurably by setting up a recurring gift or leaving a bequest in your will. Thank you!

Hope to see you soon!

Senior-living exec and adaptive-clothing entrepreneur both connected to AHS

When local entrepreneur Pat Quinn (pictured left in photo) met Waterloo alumna Trish Barbato (BA ’85, Economics) through a UWaterloo connection, it turned out to be a match made in heaven.

Pat Quinn and Trish Barbato.Trish, as Senior VP of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships with senior-living giant Revera, is always on the lookout for ways to create a better world for older adults and the people who care for them.

Pat, as CEO of Monarch Clothing, was looking to bring her company’s line of assistive clothing to market. The Waterloo-based startup has created a line of stylish, comfortable clothing designed for those who require help dressing themselves, including seniors and those living with mobility and/or cognitive conditions.

Pat had already made contact with another senior team member at Revera, and a pilot launch of Monarch’s new line was scheduled to take place at a Revera property in St. Catharines this past July.

When Revera’s employees saw the line – and the joyful response of the residents modelling their new clothes – they were so impressed that Monarch was brought on as an official Revera Innovator in Aging partner. This is a $20M program Revera launched in 2015 to partner with and invest in companies who chose to focus on innovations for the senior market.

Pat, whose UWaterloo connections include serving on the Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business advisory board for many years, was thrilled with the connection. The two were introduced through AHS Advancement, and we're happy to have played a role in bringing two senior applied-health leaders together to achieve something truly innovative.
